Freetown was founded in 1792 by formerly enslaved Africans from Nova Scotia, alongside Londoners and Jamaican Maroons, who formed the Creole (Krio) community. Upon arrival, they gathered beneath a massive cotton tree to pray and give thanks for reaching a land where they could live freely.
That cotton tree stood in the heart of Freetown for over 400 years, becoming a powerful national symbol of freedom, hope, and identity.
In 2023, the tree was struck by lightning and severely damaged. Sierra Leoneans all across the world collectively mourned.
Our “Land That We Love” T-shirt honors this historic tree, and stands as a tribute to the strength of our ancestors and the enduring spirit of Sierra Leoneans today.

This t-shirt was designed in collaboration with Meda Wurie, a Sierra Leonean graphic designer based in Freetown.
