ABOUT FAMBUL
FAMBUL means “family” in Krio, the widely spoken lingua franca of Sierra Leone.
The word represents unity, belonging, and the bonds that connect us across generations and across borders.
Our brand is rooted in the history and culture of Sierra Leone — a story that is, in many ways, a Pan-African story shaped by movement, resilience, and the coming together of people from across the African diaspora.
The capital city of Freetown was founded in 1792 by formerly enslaved Africans who arrived from Nova Scotia. They were later joined by Jamaican Maroons and Liberated Africans rescued from intercepted slave ships along the West African coast. Though they came from different regions and linguistic traditions, these communities built a new society together.
From this shared experience, the Krio language emerged. Rooted primarily in English and shaped by West African languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Akan, along with Portuguese and French influences, Krio became the common language that united these diverse communities.
Sierra Leone would later play an important intellectual role in West Africa. Founded in 1827, Fourah Bay College became the first Western-style university in the region and educated many of the leaders who would guide West African nations through independence.
Through fashion, FAMBUL seeks to share African stories with the world, using design to preserve our history, and reflect our cultural pride.
